The sounds of screaming riders on a roller coaster fill the air. Or maybe it was just the screeches from gulls along the beach. The smells of hot dogs cooking and peanuts roasting waft across the dunes.
On June 16,a fire destroyed the only bridge leading from the mainland to a peninsular barrier beach jutting between Long Island Sound and the salt marshes of Bridgeport and Stratford, Connecticut. Access to the peninsula became limited to either hiking from a parking lot in Stratford or by boating from Bridgeport. The line dividing the two towns runs through the peninsula.

When Bridgeport annexed the borough of West Stratford inthe acquisition came with a a small acre parcel of land on a barrier island at the mouth of Bridgeport Harbor. The island, thanks to its promotion as a mysterious site tied to pirate folklore, became a popular tourist destination.
Just got an e-mail from Jackson Kuhlwith whom I've worked on a few occasions in regard to abandoned properties and decaying historical sites. In response to a recent story in the Connecticut Post about artists making over the abandoned buildings on the stretch of Connecticut barrier beach that is called Long Beach West in Stratford and Pleasure Beach in Bridgeport, he went out and investigated. Father's Day of was a bad time to visit Bridgeport's Pleasure Beach. Sometime during the course of the warm summer afternoon, a motorist passing over the wooden bridge connecting the acre island to the city's east side didn't think twice before tossing a lit cigarette out his or her window. The already decaying bridge ignited and feet of its span was burnt so badly that visitors relaxing at the beach or at the Polka Dot Playhouse had to be brought back to the mainland by ferry.
A bridge connecting the peninsula to the East End burned incutting off access. And what has Mayor Joe Ganim done with that little slice of coastline since he ousted Finch and took over City Hall in ? Beginning this week, the Seaview Avenue lot, leased by the city since from the Julian family of contractors, is closed to the public.

Hot summers, cold winters. It is one of connecticuts newer ghost towns and it is fairly sized streching about 2 miles long. It was home to a small community of beachside homes, an ammusement park, and the WICC radio tower all of which are now abandonned except for the radio tower which is accessed for maintainence by WICC via hover craft. Pleasure beach was a thriving seaside community unitll when its only connection to the mainland a wooden bridge burnt down.
