For more than 25 years, Outward Bound Canada has worked with various Indigenous communities and organizations to help develop inspiring and valuable programs. By coordinating our expanded Indigenous leadership programs under an articulated national vision — one that includes the training of young Indigenous leaders as Outward Bound instructors and the hiring of a full-time Indigenous program manager — and by measuring the outcomes through an evaluation tool customized for this program, our intent is to significantly increase the scope and impact of our programming for Indigenous youth across Canada. In addition, our impactful Women of Courage program will be expanded to offer a wilderness program specifically for Indigenous women.
After an unexpectedly long journey navigating the public transit schedule from Baltimore, we were eager to join the demonstration. Indigenous women are one of the most vulnerable populations in this country; they are disproportionately affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, murder, human trafficking, and kidnapping. Communities and families are mourning the loss of five young Aboriginal girls who took their own lives in separate incidents in Western Australia, Townsville and Adelaide this year.
